David A. Lane is Director and co-founder of the Professional Development Foundation, which for over forty years has pioneered work-based professional development. A leading contributor to research and practice in counselling psychology and coaching, he has worked extensively across major consultancies, multinational organisations, and public sector and government bodies. He is a Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and Canterbury Christ Church University, and has played a formative role in shaping coaching as an academic and professional discipline, including establishing the first Master’s programmes in Coaching delivered in London, Cape Town, and New York, and co-founding the International Centre for the Study of Coaching with Middlesex University to support doctoral research.
Professor Lane has held significant leadership roles within professional bodies, including Chair of the British Psychological Society Register of Psychologists Specialising in Psychotherapy and Convenor of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations group on Psychotherapy. His contributions span the establishment of team supervision within school systems in the 1970s, the development of mentor coach and team coaching programmes in health services and organisations from the 1980s onward, and the creation of accreditation systems for coaching for APECS, EMCC, and WABC. His work has been widely recognised with major honours, including the BPS awards for Outstanding Scientific Contribution and Distinguished Contribution to Professional Psychology, Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences, multiple lifetime achievement awards in applied psychology and coaching, and honorary recognition from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for his impact on professional education.
